Met Éireann has warned people living in the southeast of Ireland to expect heavy rain and thunderstorms throughout Tuesday night.
The forecaster has issued a status yellow warning for counties Carlow, Wexford and Wicklow which takes effect from 6pm until midnight.
It has specified the threat of heavy rain with embedded thunderstorms, localised flooding, hazardous travel conditions and possible disruption.
Outbreaks of rain are to continue northward, particularly in the Munster and south Leinster area.
“We’ve got spring tides at the moment and coupled with onshore winds we could see some overtopping around coastal areas,” Met Éireann forecaster Joanna Donnelly said on Tuesday evening.
“[The rain] is quite heavy and there might be a rumble of thunder coming up from the south into the southeastern corner; that’s where the warning is in operation for out until midnight tonight. So you could see some disruption in those areas but the rain itself is actually widespread across the whole country.”
Sunshine and showers are expected for Wednesday and Thursday but there will be a return to persistent rain on Friday.
Carlow Weather, an online amateur forecaster with 120,000 followers on X, said rain in the county had already arrived in some areas” with “more on the way with heavies in [the] southeast and east”.
