    If one (or both) of your Porsche cup holders is opening very fast, or is jammed and won't open/close at all, it is likely due to a broken gear inside.  Similarly, if the trim panel, that serves as a door to hide the cup holders, has a problem with opening or closing, it could also be due to a broken gear.
    The cup holder assembly contains 3 copies of the same plastic gear
    - one for each cup holder, and another for the trim panel.  If/when these gears break, the solution from Porsche is to replace the entire cup holder assembly, at a cost of approximately 0, plus labor.
    Instead,
    you can remove the assembly yourself, replace the broken gear(s), and have a cup holder system that works as good as new!  Removing and repairing the assembly is fairly easy, and it only requires a few basic tools
    (two different sizes of star (Torx) bits, a bit driver, and a small flat-head screwdriver).  I will provide helpful instructions, with photos, along with the replacement gears.  These gears have been cast from semi-rigid urethane resin.
    The cup holder assembly shown in the photos is part number 99755229403, and that assembly is used in the following vehicles:
    * Porsche Cayman, 2006-2012
    * Porsche Carrera (all versions), 2005-2012
    * Porsche Boxster, 2005-2012
    Other Porsche models, and other years, use a different cup holder assembly.  However, many of them have the exact same internal design, using the same small gears, that are prone to breaking.
    For example, the cup holder assembly in many Porsche Panamera's uses these same small gears inside.
    If the gear for 1 cup holder has broken, it's very likely that the gear for the other cup holder will also break soon.
    That was my experience, with my own car.  The two gears broke within weeks of each other.  The 3rd gear, that operates the trim panel door, is less likely to break than the other 2, but it can still happen.  Therefore, it makes sense to purchase a 2-pack of replacement gears, even if you only have 1 broken gear currently.
