    Description

Featured in this auction is a beautiful, miniature antique Van Briggle Art Pottery cabinet vase from the Arts-and-Crafts era.  This piece has a somewhat ovoid shape with a gorgeous arts-and-crafts motif of stylized thistles encircling the body with an "egg-and-dart" detail at the shoulder.  This vase is in very good condition; however, there are some imperfections to note.  There is a heavy drip glaze with skips and drips (both inside and out) with a slight glaze separation at one of the design details.  There are minor scrapes on the piece from gentle use, as well as a shallow grinding sliver on the base rim and a small abrasion at the top rim (perhaps a firing fracture?).  There are no chips, no crazing and no repairs.
This piece is approximately 3-3/4" tall, 4" wide at the shoulder, and 2-1/2" wide at the top rim opening (which is not perfectly round).  The base of the pottery is incised with the "AA" logo and script "Van Briggle".  The shape number is identified as #654 according to
The Collector's Encyclopedia of Van Briggle Art Pottery
by Sasicki and Fania.  Glaze remnants and smears on the base are termed a "dirty bottom" and date the piece to the 1910's.  This gorgeous underglaze is a thick, deep mulberry color with what looks like a dark-blue overdrip.  On the whole, the vase is very clean both inside and out.  Check out all 10 photos!  This sweet little cabinet piece exhibits pure Mission style and would be perfect for any Van Briggle or American art pottery collector.  Check out my other pottery listings!
