Description
This Aldridge "Babe" Peebles gamer is vault marked and sidewritten
. It comes from the J.F.Hillerich&SonCo. cellar and this double dash dot dash labeled artifact has "A. Peebles" stamped on the barrel front. It also has his model "P 6" on both the knob and barrel ends with the traditional white paint in those impressions.
In 1910 starting at the age of 24, outfielder Babe Peebles
minor league baseball career began with the Beeville Orange Growers. Babe finished 1910 with the Brownsville Brownies. He continued with Brownsville in 1911. In 1913 he played in Denison with the Denison Blue Sox. The next year in 1914 with the Denison Champions. Babe played with the Denison Railroaders in his final three seasons in 1915, 1916 and 1917.
This bat is side written "Budweiser A. Babe Peebles 5-6-15". It was this Championship 1915 season that this bat came from. The Denison Railroaders won the 1915 Western Association Pennant. On that team was a future Hall of Fame'r, Rogers Hornsby. See the attached 1915 Western Association Pennant Winners photograph. Outfielder and manager Peebles is in the middle center and his very young 19 year old shortstop Rogers Hornsby is off his left shoulder in the top row. Hornsby then finished 1915 playing in 18 games with the Cardinals beginning his 24 year long MLB career. Peebles was known for his eye for talent.
Peebles played and managed the Railroaders to another pennant in 1916.
After his final season playing and managing in 1917, Babe Peebles became an officer for the Negro League franchise Columbus Blue Birds.
