Dated Van Briggle Art Pottery Bowl-1907-Mauve-Arts and Crafts Shape 547 from ‘06

I just believe I discovered a treasure!!! This van Briggle bowl produced in 1907 was decorated in a mauve colored glaze. Evidently when the glaze was applied and the piece fired, so much glaze collected around and on the base that it covered up the markings so the piece had to be ground and marked at the factory in black ink. Thorough examination of the bottom does show part of the original  markings including the van Briggle AA logo, parts of Colorado Springs and the shape number. The black ink has number 47 but underneath the glaze the number 547 can clearly be seen close to the edge of the base. According to the records in the book Van Briggle Notes and More, as of its printing, an example of this shape has yet to be documented. Obviously I have no idea how many of these bowls were produced so an example may have surfaced since its printing.  This shape was first designed in 1906, all pieces of this time and numbering sequence have no records of the actual person who designed the shape.  The bowl measures 6” across and stands 2 3/4” tall. The base measures just under 2 1/2” diameter. Thorough examination reveals no chips, cracks, damage or repairs. The inside is clean and shows no residue or staining from use.  I will mention a couple pinpoint glaze pops on the bottom of the inside and on the outside rim some actual glaze skips whereas the glaze while firing must have receded down the side of the bowl in areas to cause the underlined chocolate colored clay to be visible.  This color clay was also documented to be used only from sometime in 1905 until 1907.  I will also mention some horizontal and vertical streaking in the glaze from production. These aspects of this bowl are clearly visible in numerous pictures.  A wonderful and rare example for any van Briggle collection!
