The energy produced by electrical arc in a circuit breaker is absorbed by SF6 gas. The sulfur hexafluoride molecules temporarily disassociate under arcing and recombine after the arc is extinguished. Because air contains moisture and other contaminants, it must be removed so that it dost not adversely affect the recombining mechanism of the SF6 molecule. The GHE400 reclaiming system offers the user all the tools to prevent contaminating new gas and includes the capability to remove decomposition byproducts from gas that has been in service.
The main components used to transfer gas on the GHE400 are the compressor and booster. The compressor is used for bulk transfer of gas out of the electrical apparatus into storage. Even though there is oil in the crankcase, the compresor will not allow oil to come in contact with the SF6 gas, so there are no oil separation devices to monitor. The compressor and booster will transfer oil-free SF6 at an average rate of 280 lbs/hr. It is capable of pulling 10 Torr of vacuum on the breaker, which means it is capable of reclaiming 99.8% of the SF6 from the breaker.
The vacuum pump is used to remove air from the electrical apparatus, connecting hoses, and the piping on the reclaiming system itself. The vacuum pump discharges to atmosphere and is not connected to the compressor. The pump is oil lubricated and it is a frequently used component because step one of most operations begins with evacuating the hose.
The SF6 gas vaporization system is another important component. It is used during refilling operations. Liquid SF6 is allowed to enter a heat exchanger where it is converted to a gas by temperature and pressure dynamics. It is an automatically controlled process. Once the vaporizer switch is turned on and SF6 is allowed to flow from the storage tank, the vaporization system will not allow liquid SF6 to be transferred to the circuit breaker.
A fan cooled, high efficiency steel heat
exchanger
is located in the piping after the compressor. It is used to remove the heat of compression from the gas to help facilitate compressing the gas in storage to a liquid.
The system design incorporates three ports to which hoses can be attached. Gas can be transferred and processed through a number of different flow paths, depending on the port and valve arrangement selected. This covered in detail in the operating section of the manual.
The humidity gauge is the thin film polymer senso which reads
dew-point
(in degrees Fahrenheit) of the SF6 gas. The
dew-point
value can be read from the PLC display on the valve panel. The
humidity
gauge is
factory
calibrated and the setting buttons should not be pressed at any time.
