COLLINS DESIGNED AND BUILT THIS HIGH END RECEIVER PRIMARILY FOR THE GOVERNMENT. FEW OF US COULD AFFORD THE STICKER PRICE OF ABOUT 00 -- IN 1960 PRICES! COVERING .2 TO 30 MHZ IT WAS AN IDEAL GENERAL COVERAGE RECEIVER FOR EMBASSIES AND GOVERNMENT FACILITIES AROUND THE WORLD.
THIS ONE WORKS. BROUGHT IT UP ON A VARIAC AND IT CAME TO LIFE. IT HAD A "SCRATCHY" SOUND AS IT WAS SWITCHED FROM BAND TO BAND (30 ALL TOGETHER) SO I REMOVED IT FROM THE CABINET AND TOOK APART THE TURRET WAFER ASSEMBLY AND CLEANED ALL THE CONTACTS. THERE'S NO SCRATCHY SOUNDS AND IT WORKS NICELY.
CHECKED OUT MANY OF THE HAM BANDS AND GOT SIGNALS ON 80/40/20/15. DIDN'T HEAR MUCH ON 10 BUT HEARD LOTS OF STATIC. I SUSPECT 10 WAS DEAD -- AS IT OFTEN IS. CHECKED FOR WWV AT 5 AND 10 MHZ. IT'S RIGHT THERE. TRIED AM, CW, USB, AND LSB -- ALL WORK. THE SHARP CW FILTER WORKS FINE. I TURNED ON THE CALIBRATOR AND SCANNED SEVERAL BANDS. AT EVERY MULTIPLE OF 100 YOU COULD ZERO BEAT THE CALIBRATOR WITHIN A FEW HUNDRED HZ. IT TRACKS PRETTY WELL.
THE RATHER COMPLEX DIAL ASSEMBLY WORKS SMOOTHLY. ALL KNOBS TURN AND FUNCTION AS THEY SHOULD. THE METER WORKS BUT THE ZERO ADJUSTMENT IS RATHER SENSITIVE. IT WANTS TO "JUMP" A BIT WHEN ADJUSTING IT. I DIDN'T MESS WITH IT BUT IT NEEDS ATTENTION. IT CERTAINLY DOESN'T IMPACT THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE RADIO BUT I WANTED TO MENTION IT.
LIGHT LIGHTS, ETC. ETC. FRONT FACE IS CLEAN WITH NO SCRATCHES. THE CHASSIS IS CLEAN WITH NO CORROSION. THE UNDERSIDE OF THE CHASSIS LOOKS PRETTY ORIGINAL. I SAW NO MYSTERY WIRES, HOLES OR PARTS. UNLIKE MANY S51'S OUT THERE TODAY, THIS ONE HAS AN ORIGINAL CABINET -- AND NOT ONE CUTOUT FROM AN S LINE UNIT TO ACCOMMODATE THE RECEIVER.
I DID NOTICE A FLAW IN THE TRIM RING. AS SOME OF THESE RINGS DO, IT IS SEPARATED A LITTLE AT THE JOINT. IT'S ACTUALLY ON THE BOTTOM OF THE RADIO, BUT I TOOK A PICTURE SO YOU COULD SEE THE SLIGHT SEPARATION -- PROBABLY AN 1/8 INCH OR SO. IT OBVIOUSLY DOESN'T IMPACT THE PERFORMANCE, BUT I WANTED TO MENTION IT. ALSO, THERE ARE A COUPLE OF SMALL "DINGS" ON THE BACK. AGAIN MANY PEOPLE WOULD NOT NOTICE THEM, BUT I WANTED TO POINT THEM OUT. TOOK PICTURE.
THAT'S ABOUT IT. THIS RECEIVER WILL WORK OUT OF THE BOX OR YOU RETURN IT. AS WITH ANY 60 YEAR OLD RECEIVER, THE OWNER WILL PROBABLY WANT TO CHECK TUBES, TIGHTEN CHASSIS SCREWS, USE SOME DEOXIT, ETC. ETC. MY POINT IS THAT TO MAKE IT WORK EVEN BETTER THE NEW OWNER MAY WANT TO SPEND A LITTLE TIME WITH IT.
I AM INCLUDING THE RATHER LONG, LONG MANUAL. IT'S IN GREAT SHAPE -- ALMOST NEW.
INCLUDED IS THE POWER CORD. I WILL REMOVE THE LARGE TUNING KNOB TO HELP PREVENT ANY BREAKAGE IN SHIPMENT. YOU'LL NEED A BRISTOL WRENCH TO ATTACH IT -- FAIRLY INEXPENSIVE ON EBAY IF YOU DON'T HAVE ONE.
NO RESERVE -- HIGH BIDDER GETS IT. WILL SHIP FEDEX. IT WILL BE DOUBLE BOXED AND WELL PADDED. INTERNATIONAL SHIPMENTS VIA GLOBAL SHIPPING CENTER. SORRY, NO RETURNS ON INTERNATIONAL SHIPMENTS.
