Description
This is a complete solution for the few problems that the Ten Tec 229, 229A, 238 and 4229 antenna tuner have. Otherwise these tuners are the BEST! (WHY? They are the most efficient design! Why didn't Ten Tec put an ON-OFF switch on the tuner for the panel lamps? I don't know but I have developed the solution!
You know you can't just drill a hole for a switch (why would you want to damage the front panel anyway) because there is a sub panel that prevents this. You know how hard it is to see the pointer on the dial when not lit up.
If you leave the old filament type bulbs lit all the time, they burn out!
You also know that you can't find where to put the roller inductor when the stretch cord is too loose from age.
IT'S EASY TO FIX, see my instructions below
I apologize for my poor photography, I have no idea how to photograph lighting solutions!
Photographs try to show the 229 and 238 tuners with different color bulbs.
I made a simple way of providing ON-OFF for the panel lamps, the replacement LED bulbs, stretch cord AND dial string for the slide rule dial!
ANTENNA TUNER IS NOT INCLUDED!
What you get:
Box with wiring and switch
with Anderson Power Poles professionally crimped
!
THREE WHITE led bulbs (if you want BLUE or ANY combination instead, send me a message when you purchase) NOTE: we DO NOT have RED
ONE 20" long stretch cord (use 16" loop to loop), color of cord may vary
ONE 50" (46" needed) dial cord of the proper diameter, color of cord may vary.
Ten Tec stringing picture is one of the pictures in this listing (last picture)
(NOTE: extra bulbs available for each (if we can ship together), send a message and I will send a PP bill, get extra colors for a neat custom look or maybe you need bayonet base bulbs like this for other 5-14 VDC projects!
These great bulbs put out useful light down to 5VDC! I use them ALL OVER THE PLACE! I use them for 5, 6, 9 and 12 VDC applications!
How to use:
Box (approx 0.75" thick) with switch and wiring (shielded cable with RCA plug to back of tuner and 5 feet Red/Black wire with Anderson Power Pole connectors professionally crimped to your station power supply or 12 vdc power distribution system)
I lift my tuner and place under front panel (this WILL lift the front off the table a bit more than the rubber feet of your tuner).
You can also just use your own velcro or double sided tape to the side of the tuner or whatever you wish.
3 WHITE led bulbs (you can add more bulbs at each or ask me for any combination of Red White or Blue)
1 20" long stretch cord (NOTE: tie cord for 16" loop to loop)
1 50" long dial cord (use only if yours needs to be replaced, these last a long time)
Plug RCA cable into rear panel connector for panel lighting first
Then connect to YOUR power source 11-15 VDC (there is NO fuse provided, so if you want to use one, you connect to your fused power supply) You can use a wall wart (less than 100 ma is needed (about 25 ma per bulb x3) or your 13.8 vdc station power supply
SEE MY OTHER LISTINGS FOR THE SAME UNIT WITHOUT ANDERSON POWER POLE CONNECTORS
How to do it:
These are your instructions! READ entirely BEFORE you start
Remove four screws from top cover (2 each side), remove top cover
Remove knobs (for my 229 and 238 tuners, the knobs are Torx T07 except the "SWR SET" knob which is a 1.3mm allen) Again, these are types and sizes needed for MY 229 and 238 tuners
Remove FOUR dark colored screws from corners of front panel
Remove three plug connectors from board near meter
Remove old stretched cord from dial pointer and the other end
Slide pointer to the right while turning roller inductor shaft clockwise, both to the end of travel
Tie knot is one end of new stretch cord
Tie knot and do the same with the other side but measure to have about 16" loop to loop.
Put one loop over end of dial pointer post
Run down and under lower right corner bushing
Run to the left and go to EITHER the lower left bushing OR the capacitor shaft
Carefully remove old bulbs, they are bayonet twist lock. BE CAREFUL when installing the new LED bulbs so you do not twist the front of the bulb and not be "pushed" into the socket to clear the two "barbs" on the sides of the bulb. Look carefully and see what I mean.
NOTE: on the 238, I bend the aluminum plate back in order to get to the meter bulb, that is much easier than removing the nuts and bolts for that plate. Do as you see fit.
Re-assemble in reverse order (be certain to have capacitor FULLY MESHED when dial is on 10)
Enjoy!
TIP: Always leave your tuner roller inductor pointer near the far right end of travel as this puts the least stress on the stretch cord.
TIP: Use green kitchen pot cleaning pad or fine sandpaper to "scratch" the bulb clear plastic lens for more light diffusion: IF you do this, BE CAREFUL not to twist and break the bulb plastic from the base! Replacement bulbs are each plus shipping.
NOTE: the lighting is not uniform across the slide rule dial. This is because of the Ten Tec design of bulb placement
The listing will come with all WHITE bulbs unless you specify all BLUE or some WHITE-BLUE combination (send me a message, if you do not specify, you will get THREE WHITE LED bulbs
All WHITE is the brightest and best for the slide rule dial. All BLUE gives a really COOL look.
