    Description

My husband had quite a collection of these items that featured Bruce Bairnsfather's 'Old Bill' cartoons. Capt. Bairnsfather started drawing the cartoons in 1915 and they were featured in publications during the war.
This sale is for a lidded pitcher that stands 6-1/2" tall, 3-1/4" diameter at the opening and 4" diameter at the base. The handle is about 4" long and completely attached. The transfers are in good condition with some rubbing (see photos). There is significant craquelure and discoloration of the pottery.
The lid is in good condition other than it is completely detached from the jug. It lines around the opening. I have been informed that it is actually polished pewter, but it resembles sterling. It is thin and slightly flexible. It could be repaired.
The front has the Bairnsfather cartoon "Coiffure in the Trenches - keep your head still or I'll 'ave ye blinking head off". The back has one of his most famous cartoons "Well if you knows of a better 'ole, go to it". The upper rim is lined with drawings by Bairnsfather, a helmet, hat, canteen, etc.
The bottom says, "A Souvenir of the Great War; Commenced Aug 4th 1914; Armistice Nov 11th 1918; Peace signed June 8th 1919" along with "Bairnsfather Ware" Grimwades Stoke on Trent and a cartoon of "Old Bill", Bairnsfather's most famous character.
There is wear to this pitcher, but it is a very rare example of Bairnsfather Ware. Again, see the pictures for better descriptions.
