Can be hidden under a dime, easily.
Amateur Radio HAMs (E, A, G Class), get your 160 Meter QRP NET on the air FAST and SIMPLE with these self contained low-power transmitters.
These are clock oscillators in a DIP 8 size package.
The nominal 1.8432 MHz falls nicely inside the 160 Meter HAM band (1.8 - 2.0 MHz).
Add some real excitement to those code practice sessions by actually going on the air while you learn real life NET operating skills!
TRY THIS: Place a single receiver in the classroom, and let a handful of kids "call" and communicate with each other using only their CW skills. No talking allowed. Standby for break-ins. This can be a real learning aid.
If your receiver has a BFO or product detector, use these in CW (Carrier) Mode. If you are listening on an AM-only receiver, add a simple modulator, such as the linked example below, for MCW (Modulated CW). Choose different values of resistors / capacitors for different tones.
SIMPLE WIRING
For CW mode, just ground pin 4, connect a LPF and antenna to pin 5 and key +5 VDC to pin 8 and you're on the air. (Add a 0.001µF bypass directly across pins 4 & 8 for improved oscillator stability.) Doesn't get any simpler!
Alternately, you can key pin 1, the Output Enable (OE) pin as shown below. In this configuration, the oscillator stays on all the time, but the output is turned on / off.
RANGE
Distance, of course, varies. Most QRP'ers know that besides having a good receiver, it's the
antenna, antenna, antenna
that is the key to success. To many, that's the whole point (thrill, challenge, excitement) of QRP operation - constructing antennas to maximize performance with low power levels. Imagine what it will do with your antenna! (The output is TTL so consider a low pass filter to suppress harmonics.)
Here's a sample MCW Mode Schematic:

WIRELESS ALARMS - Anywhere
Wire a door, gate, pressure sensor, pool level detector, thermostat, motion detector -- anything that can switch 5 Volts. Use 4 AAA's and a diode to drop the voltage to about 5.5V. For short distances with a good receiver, an antenna may not even be needed, or maybe just a short wire.
CW (Carrier) Mode is the simplest method. A simple 555 oscillator, such as the one shown in the MCW schematic link above, will modulate the transmitter if you prefer a tone. Select different resistors / capacitors to produce different tones for easy identification of different monitoring / alarm stations.
Replace the NE555 timing resistor with a thermistor, and you have a remote temperature telemetry transmitter.
Other possibilities:
Beacon
Telemetry
Wireless Remote Alarm Sending Units
Add a LPF and small amp for a serious QRP transmitter.
80, 40, 20, 10 and 6 Meter versions are also available.

Note: Configurations and applications vary and performance varies. Please review FCC Rules and Regulations Part 15 and Part 97 if you are not certain your particular use is in compliance. The suggestions above are not intended to promote illegal or improper use. It is the amateur's responsibility to ensure the completed transmitter is in compliance and that it's operation does not interfere with other equipment.
